The SDR is recognised by Newport County Borough Council as its highest single priority scheme for the improvement of Newport’s principal highway network. This is a 9.3km urban highway on-line widening scheme to improve the flow of traffic through heavily congested industrial and residential areas on the south side of Newport. The route will bring major economic and environmental benefits, including improved access to major investment opportunities in the southern areas of the town and the relief of traffic congestion at critical points on the existing network.
It includes a major new landmark crossing of the River Usk, along with crossings of two railway lines. Ground conditions are mixed and include the need to cross a domestic refuse landfill site. Major statutory undertakers' diversions are required throughout the project along with significant third party liaison.
